The Popularity of Reality Shows Among Young People

In the modern society the mass media has an enormous effect and therefore impact on various aspects of private and public life. The media (especially television) has become an important type of leisurely activity and entertainment in our lives. Television heroes stormed into our lives like new best friends. We talk about them all the time and we try to be and act more like them every passing minute. We are constantly surrounded with different media images and messages. Within one hour of television viewing, we can be faced with more â€Å"images† than a man in pre-industrial time has been all his life. The question lies in how to accept and manage all these â€Å"images†. We have to learn that what we see on television is not reality, it is just a†¦show more content†¦Reality television creates an illusion of reality through editing and other post-production techniques. Everything has to be done to attract the audience – the same as writers do in their books, the story always to be intense and make the reader want to know the ending and come back for more. So we ask ourselves, how real is reality television? Actually nothing is left to chance. The participants are selected on the basis of psychological profiles: searching for people who want attention, people who are very emotional and people who have a spicy history (examples include: prostitutes, strippers, transvestites, homeless people†¦). They even look for contestants with whom viewers can relate to. In Slovenia we have different types of reality shows. The first one was a music reality show called â€Å"Popstars†, where contestants would sing and dance and the winners of the show would form a group. Then we had â€Å"The Bachelor† (Sanjski moÃ… ¡ki), Bar, Big Brother and finally â€Å"The Farm† and the â€Å"The Celebrity Farm†. We even have American types of reality shows like Americas next top model, Marry a billionaire, Extreme makeover and Runway show. In Slovenia the ratings are enormous for Slovenian reality shows. The most successful right now is â€Å"The Celebrity Farm† where the contestants are Slovenian celebrities. So what kinds of people apply on these types of shows?
